The Devil, #15
The Devil
XV

A ram's head crowned by an inverted star, has bat's wings and a hairy bottom half. To look at, the Devil is a scary figure. He has his right hand raised in a benediction while his left hand is holding a torch lowered, which appears to be lighting the flaming tail of the naked man in front. The naked man is wearing horns and is chained around the neck to the oblong upon which the Devil sits. On the left side is a naked women whose tail is comprised of the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. She is also chained around the neck and wears horns. It looks like there is no way out of this - a sad state of affairs. Here we see the two figures from the No. 6 symbol, The Lovers, totally captured by the Devil. Gone is the confusion and uncertainty of the Lovers, being replaced with the blackness of the subconscious in command. What are the people to do? They do not look like they are straining or fighting this. If they want freedom from this state, they will need to take the chains off from around their necks and step free. We all have choice every minute of the day, and now they will need to make a choice to either free themselves, to step out from the chains that bind them - their thoughts, feelings, responses - anything which holds them into a stagnate position and make themselves free, or stay where they are - bound.
