The Moon, #18
The Moon
XVIII

A crayfish is creeping out of a pool of water onto a path. The path winds past a dog, the tamed, and a wolf, the untamed. Both are howling and baying at the moon, which hangs in the air with the sun shining out behind. The wolf (subconscious) and the dog (conscious) represent the need to balance and be aware of what is in the subconscious through the conscious. The pathway proceeds on through two towers where 15 yods of light are in the air between the two towers. These 15 yods represent the 15th higher arcana symbol the Devil. Once the pathway moves behind the towers it meanders off into the hills in the background.

The moon signifies you will need to become aware of your fears and other emotions. If you are not aware of your emotions they can take over. Your defence mechanism, the ego, can emerge subtly and you may not be aware of it - you may feel you are absolutely 'right' in the situation. If you can become aware of the tendency of your subconscious mind to take control through the emotions, you will become aware of your fears and how you respond. Then you go from the subtly of the Moon back to the Devil (where the subconscious is in full control).

By allowing your emotions to rule, you will have no control over your responses. The fear will be controlling you. You may have strong fears which are easily recognized, but it is the subtle fears, concerns and reactions which are often the hardest to discern; when you experience them you will feel "I am right." When you have the feeling "I am right," and are earnestly defending your viewpoint, check motives and hidden, inner fears. These are often what you are protecting. The Moon advises us to be in command of our responses, our imagination, our inner fears and anxieties. We need to have these under control before we can progress onto the vibration of the Sun.
